Our Hermit Crabs

Purple Pinchers
Ruggies
Strawberrys
Ecudorian

These are all the hermit crabs we currently own, with their names, nicknames, and current colors. Also listed are their "birthdays", which are supposed to be the days we got them. However, we didn't start keeping track of what day we got each hermit crab until quite recently, so the ones that are starred we made up so those crabs would have "birthdays" too.

At the bottom of this page we list crabs who are sadly no longer with us.

Purple Pinchers (Coenobita clypeatus)

These land hermit crabs are found in Florida and the Carribean. They are generally red and purple in coloration and are famous for their large purple claws. They can be purchased at most pet stores including national chains such as Petco and PetSmart. They tend to favor turbo shells and other shells with a round opening.

Strawberrys (Coenobita perlatus)

These land hermit crab are found from Tanzania to the southwest Pacific and also in Australia. They have a red coloration with white 'pips', although a lack of nutritian can produce white areas. They are more difficult to obtain within the United States and are rarely found in pet stores. We found ours at Petco in the summer, there has been some speculation that this was only a trial run, and we have not seen them again since. They tend to favor turbo shells and other shells with a round opening. However, they are also happy to use shells with an enlogated opening.
