Doc Wellfish™ Aquarium Salt

Aquarium salt is one of the products that seems to stir up both brand loyalty and lots of debate among hermit crab hobbyists. Doc Wellfish is held up as ideal by some hobbyists because it is essentially nothing more than evaporated sea water, so this salt is all natural and doesn't have the additives that some other brands do. Other hobbyists say it's not as good as some other brands as it is made for fresh to brackish water tanks and doesn't have the added trace elements that are needed to sustain a salt water tank.

While I think there's something to the latter arguement in the case of aquatic crabs, where they're spending significant portions of their life in the water, I don't think the arguement rings as true for land hermit crabs. They just don't spend significant enough time in the salt water to have those trace elements really make that big of a difference, especially if they have a fairly well rounded diet.

I like Doc Wellfish salt a lot and it's very cost effective, I will buy it again. It comes in a convenient "milk carton" type box and the salt doesn't become caked over time, at least in my climate (someplace significantly more humid might have more problems).

It does take a little more stirring than some other brands to get it to dissolve due to the large salt crystals though; I found it helped a lot to mix it in warmish water. For land hermit crabs, use the directions on the box for hatching brine shrimp.
