Instant Ocean® Aquarium Salt

Aquarium salt is one of the products that seems to stir up both brand loyalty and lots of debate among hermit crab hobbyists. Instant Ocean is a synthetic aquarium salt with (according to the manufacturer) "every necessary major, minor, and trace element and has no nitrates and no phosphates." To some hobbyists this inclusion of extra trace elements that would be present in sea water is important, though I don't think it necessarily holds the same importants for land hermit crabs that it would for marine varieties since land hermit crabs just don't spend such a significant amount of time in the water.

However, Instant Ocean® is a perfectly serviceable product that disolves easily and comes in a convenient sized box for hermit crabs (5 gallon). It's more cost effective than buying premixed salt waters, but not the cheapest brand of aquarium salt you'll find. One thing I didn't like about Instant Ocean is that over time the product caked even in my relatively dry climate, even though I got the smallest available box to try to avoid that problem. I also found the bag in a box delivery to be slightly harder to measure out than Doc Wellfish brand, which is the only brand I'd previously used.

While I probably will not buy this again, it's purely due to personal preference about ease of use (due to the caking and measurement issues), not usefulness of the product itself. For land hermit crabs, use a half a cup of salt to a gallon of water.
